Disarming AI Talk
The CIC provides talks, workshops, learning programmes and educational resources on subjects connected with peace, human dignity and the common good. We are currently able to offer a talk entitled:
Disarming Artificial Intellegence:
Autonomous Weapons and the Catholic Church
Artificial Intelligence is increasingly shaping both everyday life and modern warfare. This engaging and accessible talk explores the development of lethal autonomous weapons, the growing use of AI in military decision-making, and the profound ethical question of whether machines should ever be permitted to select and attack human targets.
Drawing on developments at the United Nations, international humanitarian law and Catholic Social Teaching, the session examines questions of human dignity, conscience, accountability, proportionality and meaningful human control. It also introduces the Catholic Church’s developing response to artificial intelligence, including the Rome Call for AI Ethics, statements by Pope Francis and the Holy See, and Pope Leo XIV’s teaching on technology, warfare and human responsibility.
Through real-world examples and interactive discussion, participants are invited to consider who bears responsibility when autonomous systems cause harm and what safeguards are needed to ensure that technological progress remains at the service of humanity and peace.
Suitable for: parishes, schools, colleges, universities, peace groups, chaplaincies and community organisations.
In addition to this, The Montini Centre is currently developing a programme of talks, workshops and educational resources exploring themes including nuclear weapons and disarmament; conflict prevention and non-violent approaches; human dignity and integral human development; Catholic Social Teaching; ethics, citizenship and public life; and the work of the Holy See on matters of peace and security.

The Montini Centre undertakes and supports research, and develops and provides resources that advance its core institutional objectives. Work is currently underway to establish a dedicated Substack site to publish our content and send newsletters. An article on AI and autonomous weapons will be published in September's Pastoral Review.
